Where I’m From

A 10th Ward Poem Inspired by the Testimonies of GWHS Students presented at Living Climate Futures on April 22, 2022.

I’m from graffiti and

Railroad tracks and

Beautiful sunsets at Cal Park.

Dogs and jackhammers barking,

New murals on decaying viaducts is where I’m from.

I am a part of beautiful wetlands,

Sandy beaches and lapping waves and

Industry always in the background.

I’m from Blue skies and smoke stacks.

Always juxtaposition:

Peaceful Nature and garbage everywhere.

But I’m also from Love.

Inspiring each other.

Unity in Struggle!

I’m disgusted, disappointed and angry.

I’m from protecting my family by demanding rights for clean air.

Hunger strikes and protesting in the rain is where I’m from.

Watching our mentors get arrested while we

Take on generational responsibilities

But…

We have to take a break and play.

I have many roles to play.

I’m from getting backlash for finding my voice and

Empowered adults empowering us.

Seeing beauty in our community.

Hope is where I’m from.
